FAQs

How many types of modifier Oligos are there?

There are more than 300 types of modifier oligos.

Why are modified oligos less productive and more expensive than standard oligos?

The main reason is that the modified monomer is less stable, the coupling time is long, the efficiency is low, and the yield obtained at the end is naturally lower than the general oligos.
Modified oligos usually need to be purified by PAGE or HPLC and the purification process is difficult. Alongside this, you will need many more raw materials (on the order of 100x more.) Both of these factors cause modified oligos to be naturally more expensive.

Do modifier labels have an effect on OD measurements?

Some fluorescent groups absorb light at 260 nm, e.g. FAM, HEX, TAMRA, TET. Others may have absorption values at 260 nm, but the data is not published/verified and has therefore not been included in the calculation.
